The month of August was again rather disappoining with regard to auroral displays at the Pole. In fact, this has been one of the strangest winters I have seen. The number of auroral displays was low and the weather was very poor much of the time. This winter has left me with memories of being battered, day after day, by high winds on my walk to and from the South Pole Telescope, neary a mile from the main station.     milky way, large and small magellanic clouds, canopus

Venus appeared during August and was visible above the hoizon on a particularly clear day.  Venus and SPT     close-up of Venus      Venus higher in the sky with a hint of twilight

The first hints of twilight were visible on clear days at the end of the month. The twilight will slowly get brighter as sunrise on September 21st approaches.    twilight backlighting the main station
