The Milky Way and Aurora Australis backlighting the South Pole Telescope (SPT)
The month of July was again rather
disappoining with regard to auroral displays at the Pole. Usually July
is one of the best months. With a year where the sun is at a
maximum of solar activity, I would expect much more auroral acitivity.
I can only speculate that some of the geomagnetic storms are of such
high intensity that the auroral oval has expanded enough to leave us in
the center of the oval, void of auroral activity.
